On June 6, Mexicans went to the polls to vote in the largest election in the country’s history. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO)’s ruling National Regeneration Movement and its allies lost their supermajority in the lower house of Congress, as well as some flagship mayoralties. However, they made notable gains elsewhere, including winning the bulk of governorships up for grabs.
What can we expect going forward? A chastened AMLO having a policy epiphany, including in the energy sector? Or will obduracy and statism prevail as AMLO looks to continue, and deepen, his so-called “Fourth Transformation”.
